None of those bucks will be predictable
as fall moves along.
As the rut approaches, the bachelor
bucks who were content to watch the
world go by alongside their male counterparts
suddenly have better things to do.
And they often put on the miles doing it.
Pennsylvania research has found that
all bucks expand their home ranges during
the rut by anywhere from 200 to 500
percent. Bucks with a spring and summer
home range on the order of a square mile
will be traveling 2 to 5 square miles by
late October.
In extreme cases, bucks can grow their
home ranges to 8 or 9 square miles.
That's in large part because, at this
time, does simultaneously are becoming
homebodies.
Male whitetails will breed with as
many females as they can. And females
often breed with more than one male - a
fact that explains why almost a quarter of
twin fawns have different fathers.
But to find females, bucks have to
travel. And a doe's home range contracts
from September to November, sometimes
down to an area as small as 200 acres -
almost a 50 percent decrease compared to
earlier in summer.
They move about less, too. On average,
does go from traveling about 1,500 yards
per day prior to the rut to about 240 yards
per day during it.
It all comes down to efficiency.
Does not only need to breed, they need
to be in the best physical shape possible
going into winter so they can successfully
birth fawns come spring. So they let the
bucks run ragged while they wait.
" If you want to be found, stay put, "
Fleegle said.
October Lull?
Bucks certainly go searching, and
they do it throughout the fall, even in
mid-October - a period often termed the
" October lull, " when many believe buck
activity drops off.
Science suggests there is no such thing.
Here in Pennsylvania, about 20 percent
of breeding does are bred in the last week
of October, and the rut is in full swing by
Nov. 1. So that's obviously a busy time.
But researchers following the movements
of collared bucks have found
bucks are as active through the entirety of
October as at any time in fall. In fact, they
actually move farther, and during more
hours of the day, than they do earlier in
fall, and more than they will when breeding
season is over.
Any lull more likely is tied to hunter
behavior, not deer behavior, Fleegle said.
Hunters get excited about opening day
of archery season. They get even more
enthused about the rut, understanding
that rut activity increases dramatically
in the last three weeks of archery season.
By comparison, they're less active
mid-season. Harvest statistics back that
up.
