Plentiful and large bears are available
to those hunters.
Pennsylvania's hunters took 3,621
black bears in 2020. That was down from
the previous year - when an all-time
record of 4,653 fell to hunters - but still
was the sixth-best harvest in state history
and in line with the previous five-year
average of 3,675.
Notably, that harvest was spread out
equitably over the state's three main bear
seasons.
Archers took 955 bears, smashing the
previous record of 561. Those participating
in the 2-year-old muzzleloader season
took 860 bears, while those in the special
firearms bear season accounted for 181.
Bear hunters killed another 1,177 in the
statewide general season.
Even the extended season that overlaps
with deer season - the most variable of
them all in terms of harvest - produced
435 bears. Hunters in the early season

Double-lung shots on bears are incredibly effective, both with firearms and archery
gear. By aiming for the lungs, there's less of a chance the projectile will strike heavy
bones. Just remember a bear's lungs are slightly farther back compared to a deer's.

As always, more than a few of those
animals were really big, too.
Abby Strayer, of McConnellsburg,
brought in the year's heaviest bear, a 719pound
male she took with a crossbow in
Ayr Township, Fulton County. The top 10
heaviest bears all exceeded 600 pounds.
None of that surprised Carrollo. While
the typical male black bear in Pennsylvania
weighs anywhere from 250 to 600
pounds, and the typical female 175 to 250,
there's always lots of food of various kinds
available to them year to year. That allows
for some impressive specimens.
In fact, there undoubtedly are more big
bears out there than hunters see or take at
any one time, she added, just because age
makes them so cagey.
" Bears of that size category can occur
every year, and if males reach age 9 or
above, there's a good chance they will be
600-plus pounds, " she said. " Bears that
