and illusion appeared to fill the
sky. It had a metallic, silvery
cast, its outline distinct and
sharp like an Olympic medal.
No one had yet run the trail
without a spill, and I focused
by running it first in my mind.
As I sat there, a greathorned
owl nearby hooted
its serenade to the moon, the
booming hoots echoing far
up the powerline. A few
minutes later, I spotted
a dark form walking
straight up the trail toward me.
It was a beautiful red fox hunting
the weedy border. He approached
very close, then spotted me, and
dashed back down, his long bushy
tail sweeping back and forth, and it
appeared that it was racing him down
the slope.
Transfixed in place, I never felt so
utterly and completely alone, completely
detached from the civilized world that lay
beyond. The multitudinous pinpricks of
lights from houses and industry formed
a yellowish incandescent galaxy, as if in
competition with the enormous flood of
stars overhead. A meteor, then another,
etched two silver streaks in the glassy
indigo dome. That was my signal, and I
laid down, clutched the steering handles
and launched myself down the slope.
I knew every tree, rock and shrub, could
anticipate the dynamics of each curve,
when to slow, when to let go, relying
on muscle memory, this a give-and-take
dance, a tango with the mountain more
than a run. Leaving the oaks and entering
the switchbacks, snow powder arced high
from the runners like prismatic diamond
dust. To slow, I dragged my boot toe to
plow or scraped it sideways at the turns.
Across the flat I am too fast, shooting into
space, landing hard. From out of a fold

in the greenbrier,
a rabbit
streaks across
my path. Ahead,
flickering through
the dark network of
the crabtree canopy, I
can see our streetlight.
My heart is beating fast, but I am not
done, and rocket across the street and down
through our yard, then launch off another
embankment and fly down a steep slope
into the weedfield below, spinning around
to a full stop facing back up the mountain.
Beaten, the old mountain sits back on
its haunches. I stand on quivering legs
and brush myself off. I realize then that
the greatest triumphs in life may often be
performed alone.
I pull my sled back up to our house
and sit on the porch step and unbuckle my
boots. I am too tired to stand and my ribs
ache. I lean back on my elbows.
High on the hill, the owl hoots, and
I wonder if it or the fox might catch the
rabbit this night. That is the real contest.
Whichever the winner would truly deserve
the gold medal and the greater reward of
living another day. The moon, now a small
flat disk, is my silver medal and I happily
resign myself to second place.
