A
MAZING is not too strong a word to assign
to Canada geese. Historic migrants across
most of North America, and winter residents on
southeastern coasts, Canadas were overhunted until
dangerously rare less than a century ago. But few wild things
have benefited, as have Canadas, from human-induced changes
on the land. Today, opportunistic Canada goose populations swell to millions, nesting
in every Pennsylvania county and every state, even in places that had never known
their " V " flights etched on spring skies.
As Canada geese exploded in numbers, they lost some of the mystique their kind
had carried with them. True migratory flocks have not fared as well, while sedentary
throngs became commonplace as pigeons, inspiring little of the wonder that lifted our
eyes under the wings of their journeying cousins.
But I can never forget a visit from somewhere to the south, one night before
encounters with these huge, impressive birds had paled to humdrum.
We lived in wooded uplands, far from standing water. I had never seen a wild
goose up close, only as wavering skeins of stark silhouettes, preceded and trailed by
a chorus somehow discordant and harmonious to the same ear.
Our township had scattered some " street " lights along our road, one of which, by
chance, stood over the lawn in front of our house. Kids came from all around to play
rough nocturnal football in its novel glow.
One night soon after that light's installation, a spring ice storm raked the skies. We
heard a disturbing thump against the house, and my mother arose in apprehension.
She came and summoned me to the one window that faced the yard beneath the light.
The window was high for me. I had to stand on my toes atop a baseboard to see
outside, and I can still feel my breath stop at what I beheld. Clumped under the light
were 50, 75, maybe a hundred Canada geese, some alert and some hunkered against
the sleet. It was much like a dream, something you never imagined you would see in
your normal surroundings. I gaped there a long time, unwilling to leave the scene to
retrieve a kitchen chair to stand upon.
My mother indulged my fascination but finally directed me to bed. When I woke
for school, the flock was gone.
Only later did I encounter enough readings, likely in Game News, to understand
the geese had been forced down by the weather, that they'd perceived the illuminated
lawn as water, or the assurance of open ground.
Even today, a commonplace Canada recalls that flock's visit, down from afar.
