A PRESCRIPTION FOR TURNING AROUND TURKEY SEASON BY STEVE SORENSEN DOCTOR'S ORDERS W e were two weeks into spring gobbler season and I hadn't yet been lucky enough to find even a stubborn bird. Silent mornings exasperate spring turkey hunters, and the air was empty of gobbles in all my go-to places. What seemed an epidemic of lockjawed gobblers made me think my prospects of success were slim. Following the advice of my doctor ultimately turned things around. First, though, there was just quiet. At the end of the season's first week, MAY 2022 a farmer who allows me to hunt his land suggested I try a particular piece of hardwoods. Exploring revealed plenty of roost trees, good nesting cover and acorns remaining from the fall. No road frontage meant little hunting pressure. So I spent the second week trying to interest a gobbler there, with little to show for it. A single, late-morning gobble on Tuesday raised my hopes, and I called in a hen on Wednesday. And that was it. 11
