industry's trade association. " Things are
going better, but it's taking a while to get
through. "
The problem, Oliva said, is not so
much a shortage of ammo as an " overabundance
of demand. "
With access to brass, gunpowder, lead,
copper, primers, and even labor generally
good, or at least better than it was not so
long ago, manufacturers across the board
are actually churning out more ammunition
than ever, Oliva said. Production at
Hornady is up 30%. Sig Sauer expanded
ammo-making capability at its Arkansas
plant last year, while Ammo Inc. last
June broke ground on a new factory in
Wisconsin.
Vista Outdoor, which includes CCI,
Federal, Hevi-Shot, Remington and
Speer, likewise is trying to satisfy the
market.
" We continue to see strong demand for
our ammunition products and are working
around the clock to meet customer
needs, " said Jason Nash, Vista's Vice
President of Marketing for Ammunition.
" We've added staff, invested in production
capabilities and are pleased to be part of
the increased interest in our hunting, conservation
and shooting heritage. "
But the level of that " interest " is
unprecedented. According to firearms
industry information and backgroundcheck
data, Americans bought a record
21 million guns in 2020, with 2.3 million
people buying a firearm in March of that
year alone.
" That's the most we've ever had in any
single month on record, " Oliva said.
That all dwarfed 2016's sales of 15.7
million guns - the previous all-time high
- and 2019's sales of 13.2 million.
" In the 50 years I've been doing this,
I've never seen anything like it, " added
Tom Grice, owner of Grice Gun Shop
in Clearfield. " I mean, we've seen some
spikes in business due to politics, or legislative
threats, maybe times when they've
talked about outlawing ARs. But this was
a big one. "
That changed things for everyone, said
Todd Edmiston, owner of A&S Indoor
Pistol Range and Firearm Store in Youngwood,
Westmoreland County. Suddenly
gone were the days when a would-be
customer could be picky about choosing a
particular model or even brand of firearm.
Inventory just disappeared.
" I'd go online to check with my
distributors, type in handgun, hit enter,
and it would come up with maybe 4,500
different SKUs, " Edmiston said. " Then
I'd hit the button that says 'in stock' and
three options would come up, two starter
pistols and one what the heck is that? It
was something you'd never heard of.
" I was literally hanging slingshots on
