created them for people from York County
to Potter County to Somerset County and
all parts in between.
They hang on to them, too.
" There are some guys I made these
for maybe 40 years ago who will stop by
the cabin and say, 'Yep, I've still got it,' "
Trout said.
Trout and Kennel both say making these
is relatively simple, taking no more than 90
minutes to two hours, from start to finish.
The process, Trout said, involves taking
a section of leg extending above the hoof
and splitting the hide. They remove the
knuckle so that the dewclaws - destined to
become ears - can be flipped up. They then
bring that hide forward, pack modeling
clay into the resulting pocket to create the
" face, " then sew the hide together.
The hooves themselves then get polished;
Kennell uses linseed oil, Trout shoe
polish or petroleum jelly. They add eyes,
ordered in bulk, and perhaps a beak and
that's it.
" A couple of pennies worth of clay, a
couple of pennies of salt, and that's all you
need, " Kennell said.
That clay hardens. Covered in hide that
likewise stiffens, the creations are solid and
relatively heavy, winding up very much
like paperweights.
Each one looks a little different than the
last. Some can be especially unique. Trout
has made some from deer hooves that are
lighter, and almost striped, rather than one
consistent dark color. Kennell has one from
a deer where one toe on the hoof curls up
and over the other toe. Some stand 6 or 8
inches tall; others less than half that.
The men give away all those they make.
" I always tell people that if their child
gets a deer or something, I'd be happy to
make them one of these, " Trout said. " I just
enjoy doing it for people. "
He made his very first one from a
sheep's foot. That was difficult, he said.
Its skin was thick, tough to work with and
hard to sew up. Deer and elk don't present
that problem, he added.
Trout said he's willing to teach his
technique to anyone interested.
" It's just an interesting hobby, one that
pretty much anyone can learn, " Trout said.
" It's not hard to do and you don't need
a lot to do it, " Kennell added. " But it's a
way to be creative with something that's
otherwise going to waste. "
