guide and him.
Bob never took a Pennsylvania black
bear, but it wasn't for lack of trying. Most
of his life, he pursued bears, but ended up
with only a fleeting glimpse of one running
away from him one Pennsylvania
bear season. He admired bears for their
dexterity and intelligence, as well as their
hulking size. He also spent plenty of time
painting black bears and writing about
them. But he wasn't heartbroken about
not taking one.
One surprising tidbit about Bob's hunting
style was that he swore off hunting
from tree stands in his later years. After
spending so much time painting murals in
scissors lifts for the Wonders of Wildlife
Museum and Aquarium and the NRA
National Museum of Sporting Arms in
Springfield, Mo., he didn't want to leave
the ground again. And he didn't.
Bob loved firearms. Over his life he
owned, rebuilt and traded scores of them.

found in a two-part feature on deer hunting
rifles published in the November and
December 2020 issues of Game News.
His " Great Guns " section of Penn's Woods
Passages also sheds tremendous light on
his passion for sporting arms.
Bob thought hunting a thinkingperson's
sport. He and I talked at length
about the need for hunters to spend more
time afield than in pursuit of the latest
gear or sporting arms heralded to make
hunting easier. In the woods is where
hunting experience and respect for game
are earned. Both shape the hunter. Both
ensure hunting's heritage.
Bob recognized the need to bolster
hunter numbers, because he well knew
the future of wildlife conservation rests
heavily on the support of hunters, who
always have paid for wildlife conservation
in America.
Over Bob's life, he had seen the
decline of ringnecks, ruffed grouse and
other small game. And he worried about
the future of whitetails and elk, given the

family, a deep connection with the outdoors and the ability to
share his exceptional talent - not only at the drawing board
and painting easel, but at the computer keyboard, where
his interests, knowledge and insights were blended into
masterfully told and captivating stories. Few were as gifted
as Bob, who always was studying and creating. He will be
sorely missed by all who knew him or appreciated his work.
