and-a-half, he finally reappeared, heading
back to the blind with what I could tell was
bad news. Dad had walked a few miles
without finding the deer.
We left the blind feeling bummed and
defeated. I headed home, driving with a
heavy heart. I'd so looked forward to finding
my buck. And what a story it would
have been. After all, how many pregnant
women not only get out and hunt, but also
harvest a slammer, at that?
Then, Dad called.
I was back in Elysburg, enjoying
brunch with some friends, when he asked
if I was sitting down. I felt my heart catch
in my chest as I asked why.
" I found him! " he cried, with as much
I pulled the trigger and the deer jumped
and donkey-kicked like nothing I ever saw
before. Quickly reloading, I shot again.
It was past dark when we popped out
of the blind, unable to contain our excitement.
Walking to the woods line, Dad and
I heard movement ahead of us. Figuring
it might be the deer, we backed out until
morning.
We enjoyed Mom's cooking that
night, but it was a long, anxious wait for
daybreak thereafter. Not only did we need
to track, and hopefully find, the buck, but
the weather was supposed to turn nasty.
So I'd need to get back home to Elysburg,
which is about an hour from where we
hunt in Dushore.
It was still dark when Dad and I got to
the blind early. When it got light enough
to see, I stayed put while he headed for the
spot we'd last seen the buck, expecting to
find it in short order.
That didn't happen.
Minutes passed as I waited for him
to return with good news. When an hour
went by, I became worried. After an hour10
excitement
as possible. " I just had a gut
feeling to go back out and look for him
and I found him! "
The buck, it turns out, had gone into a
different area of the woods. Dad fell into a
creek, getting wet from head to toe, while
searching, but ultimately found him.
That moment was unlike anything I
had ever experienced. It was such a relief
to know that I had successfully harvested
such a beautiful animal and, as a result,
had such an awesome story to share.
Weather or no weather, my husband
and I soon headed back to Dushore to
retrieve my buck. It was an old one, with
a beautiful 10-point rack with an 18-inch
inside spread, and big. Its antlers scored
127 5/8, net. Despite being worn down
by the rut, he still weighed about 160
pounds, too.
While looking at it, and long after, Dad
and I kept going on and on about how cool
the hunt was for us.
We have a lot of fun and interesting
hunting stories that we share, but this one
is by far my favorite - and one I'll always
share with my son, who was on the way
at the time!
