A
HIS WASN'T just any opening morning.
It was 10 years to the day from
when I last harvested a truly big buck.
Oh, and I was 23 weeks pregnant, too.
It was the 2022 rifle deer season and
Dad and I were hunting together as
always. We started when I was old enough
to participate in youth hunts, then continued
as a team as I made my way through
high school, college and into adulthood.
My plan was to hunt what's long been

my favorite go-to spot, the edge of a field
on family property where my Uncle John
used to live. My hopes are always high
there.
To ease the way for me, Dad bought
a new ground blind, then worked all fall
to make it as comfortable as possible. He
propped it on a wooden platform so that
it overlooked the field clearly, carpeted it
and installed a new chair so I could see
360 degrees without having to stretch or
move too much.
We got into it well before daybreak.
Dad helped me get situated, then left for
his own stand. Within a few hours I saw
a few does and a small buck, but passed
on shooting it, holding out for something
bigger.
A little while later, with no more action

to report, we went in for lunch. But we
didn't stay long. Dad - who always says
you can't kill deer if you're not out and
about - and I were back in the blind by
2 p.m. He decided to stay there with me
until dark, which was nice, as it gave us
time to talk about past hunts, our daily
lives and more.
Amid that, we saw movement. It
looked like the same does and small
buck that wandered by that morning,
back again.
Then, finally, right before sunset,
something else moved, right outside the
tree line.
" OK Dad, here we go, " I said. " I see
something. "
A few does appeared initially, followed
by a monster buck. He ducked behind
some trees, disappeared for a moment,
then came out where Dad could see him.
" OK Shelbs, there's your buck, " he
said.
I didn't see him right away because
I was focused on another spot. When I
found him, there wasn't enough room to
get him in my sights and still keep the gun
balanced on the bipod, so Dad moved it
out of the way. If I was going to make this
100-yard shot, I'd have to do it offhand.
