replace that. It doesn't work. That's just a
permanent hole in the orchard. "
Lost is not just the tree, but all the
potential revenue it would generate in fruit
over the next 15 or so years, he added.
Kauffman and his crews do what they
can to minimize such damage. With
30,000 trees on the property, though, that
calls for vigilance.
That's why they also make use of a free
vole control service: barn owls. Kauffman
has three barn owl nest boxes on the property,
two of which draw birds consistently.
Those crow-sized owls prey on
meadow voles just as feverishly as
meadow voles prey on tree roots.
According to Dan Mummert, Wildlife
Diversity Biologist in the Game Commission's
Southeast Region, voles account
for 75% of barn owl diets. Adults eat two
to three every night. Their young - nests
average five or six owlets but can contain
from three to 13 - each do the same.
" So in the course of a single year, a
family of barn owls will eat thousands of
meadow voles or rodents, " Mummert said.
" You can see why the owls are considered
a farmer's best friend. "
These days, though, they're a friend
in trouble.
Barn owl nesting pairs declined by
54% between the time of Pennsylvania's
first Breeding Bird Atlas, conducted
between 1983 and 1989, and the second,
done between 2004 and 2009. There were
thought to be 100 then. By 2020 there
were only 45 known pairs, said Game
Commission ornithologist Sean Murphy.
That number is surely a minimum,
Mummert said. Because they're nocturnal,
barn owls aren't effectively counted
in some common and long-term bird surveys,
such as Audubon's Christmas Bird
Counts and the U.S. Geological Survey's
Game Commission Wildlife Diversity Biologist Dan Mummert shows a young barn owl to a
