moon phase affects whitetails.
Some, believing the moon guides
peak deer-movement periods, alter their
hunting strategies based on moon phase.
Others balk at the concept.
An internet search will turn up study
after study about full-moon deer hunting,
in Pennsylvania and throughout the
whitetail's range. Most concede whitetails
move most at dawn and dusk, even
when the moon is full, but there are some
interesting findings about daytime deer
movements during a full moon.
One Penn State study caught my attention.
It found GPS-collared adult does
moved less at night during a full moon
than during other moon phases. That
seems to sink the common theory that deer
tend to feed all night during a full moon
and lay up during the daytime hours.
Meanwhile, a study by the former
Quality Deer Management Association
that included Pennsylvania deer found
midday deer movement tends to increase
in and around a full moon.
Some theorize a full moon - specifically,
the second full moon after
the autumnal equinox (when the sun is
directly above the equator and day and
night are equal length) - signals the peak
of whitetail rutting activity
But it seems unlikely moon phase
affects the rut, which is believed related
to photoperiod, or amount of daylight in
a day. In Pennsylvania, studies suggest
whitetail breeding reliably peaks in midNovember,
regardless of moon phase.
Hunters, however, surely might encounter
action earlier or later since different does
come into estrous at different times.
So what role, if any, does the moon
play?
While guiding for whitetails in several
eastern states, I would tell hunters to sleepAs
this trail camera photo shows, deer still
are active during the first hour of daylight
very near the full moon - even in August.
And one of the author's better Pennsylvania
archery bucks, shown at left, was taken
early in the afternoon from a ground blind
on public land, two days after a full moon.
