I would come to call Mr. Ten. He was a
straight 10-point with a rack that looked
to be more than 20 inches wide with
huge brow tines.
From that day on, I thought of Mr.
Ten almost every day.
In early August, I took the first step
toward hopefully encountering him,
hanging a stand in a tree my girlfriend,
Hannah Bieber, suggested. I also cut
trails in the grass to try and funnel
him past it and, with Hannah, trimmed
shooting lanes.
The tree that we chose had good
concealment, but it took a lot of work
to get the setup perfect.
The hope was this deer would stay
on his summer pattern into the first part
of archery season.
I knew he might not. In past years,
summer bucks caught on camera almost
always seemed to change their patterns
in September, but it was worth a shot.
As summer went on, Mr. Ten regularly
showed up once or twice each
week. I collected around 50 photos
of him.
My hopes started growing.
Maybe, just maybe, things would
work out this time and he'd offer me a
chance at the start of the season.
But only if I was careful.
I noticed that the buck went missing
from my camera for at least a week any
time I was in the area working on tree
stands or trimming paths. That told me
he was sensitive to my presence and
paying attention.
I got one more picture of him the
morning of Sept. 25 before ... he disappeared.
Altogether.
With
the season about to start, he just
stopped showing up.
Like those other deer in the past, it
seemed he'd changed his patterns. The
season was so close and now I wasn't
sure what to do.
Opening day came and, since the
wind wasn't right anyway, I stayed
out of the stand hung with dreams of
Mr. Ten in mind. I didn't climb into it,
in fact, until Oct. 3, when conditions
seemed more in my favor.
Done with work at 3 and using the
wind and the terrain to my advantage,
I snuck into the tree stand by 3:20.
Things felt right; chances are I hadn't
spooked any deer on my way in.
Having just put my bow on the
hanger, I saw a deer stand up in the
distance.
It was him, something that was clear
even without getting the binoculars

Like clockwork, these two bucks have been making their appearance
in the upper soybean field nearly every evening. They've been using
the same trail to get there from the woodlot. Just maybe, they'll be
following that same routine when the statewide archery deer season
opens Sept. 30, when their path takes them past a hunter in a strategically
