The young turkeys you see this time of year,
they're not necessarily invulnerable superheroes preordained
from birth to save their species no matter
the obstacles or threats that come their way.
But give them credit: they are survivors.
On average, less than 20% of all turkey hens in
any given year successfully hatch a brood of turkeys
and raise them to 30 days of age, said Game Commission
turkey biologist Mary Jo Casalena. Some
years are better than others, of course; survival can
occasionally approach 50%. But it can also bottom
out at close to zero.
As a species, turkeys deal with that through persistence.
Hens
seek out secretive sites to build nests, which
are shallow depressions on the ground made by
scratching away debris. They then lay eggs - one a
day, with an occasional gap thrown in - until they
have 10 to 12, usually. Continuous incubation begins
once the last egg is laid.
Survivors
The hen remains on the nest almost constantly for
26 to 28 days, moving once an hour or so to reposition
the eggs, and otherwise leaving only for short
periods to feed, drink or relieve herself.
When poults begin to break through their shells -
the process is called pipping - the hen clucks softly to
imprint the chicks to her. Then, 12 to 24 hours after
hatching, they follow her away from the nest. Leaving
the nest site behind is important for survival as the
odor of all those eggshells is attractive to predators.
In the best-case scenario here in Pennsylvania,
hens lay eggs and hatch young between the last week
of May and first week of June, Casalena
said. But not every nest is successful.
Some are lost or abandoned for any
of a multitude of reasons.
