MANAGEMENT PRIORITIES
Maintaining quality habitat for white-tailed deer is
the management priority for mammals in this area,
with a secondary emphasis on improving habitat for
cottontail rabbits. They and many other species benefit
from border-edge cuts providing food and cover
in transitional areas between mature forest stands and
herbaceous openings.
Deer, as well as black bears, turkeys and other species,
are also served by an emphasis on improving and
maintaining this game land's scrub oak component,
partly by the use of prescribed fire. That habitat serves
as a good food source and thick cover.
Commercial and noncommercial timber harvests
are carried out for the sake of woodcock and grouse,
and shagbark hickory trees are preserved and other snags created for squirrels and other
cavity nesters.
Conifers are maintained to provide thermal cover for all manner of species in winter.

tunities for white-tailed deer, black bears, turkeys, cottontail rabbits,
ruffed grouse, squirrels, raccoons, coyotes, bobcats, fishers, red foxes,
gray foxes, minks and, in lesser numbers, beavers and muskrats.
Ring-necked pheasants are also stocked here, eight times each year,
from the junior-only through the late seasons.
This game lands is also likely important to bats, as an abandoned
railroad tunnel less than a mile away has been known to hold several
species, including the federally-endangered Indiana bat and the statethreatened
small-footed bat. Broad-winged hawks, Acadian flycatchers,
scarlet tanagers, eastern meadowlarks, grasshopper sparrows and
golden-winged warblers are among the birds to be found.
HISTORY & RECREATION
The Game Commission purchased the first 492 acres of
what became this game lands in 1957. Additional land was
added via multiple purchases from later in the 1950s on up
through 2012.
Before becoming SGL 228, most of the land here was pasture
or farmland. Proof of that is the many rock piles - stones
gathered in the process of clearing fields - still to be found.
The foundations of a house and barn remain, too, along with
an intact spring house and a small cemetery that the Game Commission maintains.
Hunters and trappers aren't the only ones who use this game lands. With nearly 8 miles
of designated trails, it's popular with horseback riders and mountain bikers. Others use
the gated interior road that traverses the length of the game lands to hike, seek birds
and collect berries and mushrooms.
