There is such a thing, in the marketing
world, as a " soft launch. " That's
when a company rolls out a new product
or service on a limited basis, with
little to no fanfare, to gauge public reaction
before investing too much too
soon.
This, intentionally or not, was downright
pillowy.
Pennsylvania held its fi rst fl intlock
deer season 50 years ago, in 1974.
It wasn't statewide. Rather, it was a
three-day hunt that started after Christmas
and was open on just 37 state game
lands.
Few participated and fewer fi lled a
tag. The Game Commission only sold
2,064 muzzleloader licenses and hunters
harvested only 65 deer, four antlered
and 61 antlerless. Probably fewer
still even noticed because of the hullabaloo
surrounding the legalization of
the compound bow one year earlier, in
1973.
Would-be fl intlock hunters supported
that as part of a bargain.
Dave Ehrig, of Bethlehem, editor
of the National Muzzle Loading Rifl e
Association's magazine, Muzzle Blasts,
and one of the hunters who helped
lobby Pennsylvania's fi rst fl intlock season
into existence, said blackpowder
shooters were told that if they wanted
to see their fi rearm of choice OK'd,
they should throw their support behind
legalizing compounds.
" The fl intlock didn't come in on
its own merits because a lot of people
didn't think it had any merits in 1973, "
Ehrig said.
Proof to the contrary was a while in
coming. It took the better part of a decade
for fl intlock hunters to start consistently
and successfully harvesting
deer in any real numbers.
" And the reason, quite frankly, is
this was all too new, " Ehrig said. " Even
though the fl intlock operated with a
300-year-old system, nobody, or most
people, did not use it.
" You've got to remember we took
a generation of scoped centerfi re rifl e
hunters and stuck them back hundreds
of years and said 'OK, we want you to
make this fl intlock work.' That was a
huge learning curve. Huge. "
Ehrig was one of those to take an
antlerless deer that fi rst season. But
looking back now, he recalled with a
laugh what " a bunch of schmucks " he
and the three friends with him on that
hunt really were.
" I think the four of us, and the other
newcomers to the sport, decided that if
we're ever going to do this again, we've
got to get serious about it, " Ehrig said.
