flushed a grouse, you begin to nurture perceptive
skill, involuntarily. A grouse flush,
up close, is such a thrilling, impactful
experience that everything about the event
gets imprinted on the mind: the density
of vegetation, slope, the varied autumnal
tints and the winey smell of fermenting
crabapple are ever-after associated with
that eruption of wings.
So, those who have briefly lost their
composure to grouse thunder absorb
knowledge of where to seek it again,
employing more tools than they know
they own.
There was a span in my own past
when I felt I could predict a grouse flush
before the bird revealed proof of its presence.
Before I'd heard any rustle in the
brush or that faint mewing " peet " and full
seconds before the tumult of wings, I felt
something that nudged me alert, hoisted
the gun a little nearer my shoulder and
guided my pivot to a likely bearing. That
hunch proved true so many times that I
began to voice it to companions, often
winning their acclaim.
But despite their known affinity for
scruffy cover, grouse are also wild and
mercurial creatures and they'll surprise
you, which makes them all the more
marvelous to be near.
Once, I bulled and squirmed through a
favorite thicket of blackberry, grape and
greenbrier, keyed to the imminent flush I
knew would come, though it never did. I
circled back to approach " grousey " hides
from different angles, sure the birds
were there, to be rewarded only
with scratched-up hands.
Mentally " off-duty "
by then, I quit the thicket
and headed home through
a park-like stand of widespaced
oaks, a place you
might expect to meet casual

strollers or kids throwing sticks for their
dog to retrieve.
Grouse began flushing far ahead, dry
oak leaves whirling up in their wakes. I
hurried ahead and reset my attention, just
as another bird burst into the open. It was
as easy a shot as a grouse ever grants you.
When I opened that bird's crop, it was
crammed with white oak acorns, which
it had forsaken " typical " cover to glean.
That was a grouse that, until our encounter,
made the most of habitat nuance.
Much earlier, as a boy enchanted by the
hunting tales of my elders, I had no way
of understanding that I'd been born into
a place whose ecological circumstances,
if they could be reconstructed now, could
serve as the textbook model for ruffed
grouse habitat, harboring our state bird
in astonishing bounty.
We lived in the state's southwestern
corner, where my
mentors hunted grouse in
Greene, Fayette and
sometimes Somerset
counties. My father,
uncles and their
friends were
still youngish,
toned
from work
and residual
military conditioning.
