This wasn't even close to how I
expected to spend my father's birthday.
Returning to work in my Fayette
County district after a few days off, I
learned about information that had come
in anonymously on one of my off days.
This tip was from someone who had
seen a freshly killed deer in a yard while
walking to church, then drag marks and a
gutpile at the same location when walking
back home.
It had snowed by the time I got to the
scene, dumping several inches on top
of the previous snow cover. Still, while
the reported evidence was no longer
as plainly visible as before, I was able
to make out faint drag marks leading
from a yard into a wooded area. Those
ended just inside the wood line, where
remained a few remnants of the reported
gutpile.
But that was it. The deer seemed to
have vanished.
There were, though, boot prints leading
up a steep embankment. Following
those, I saw a man in the backyard of
a house across the road. Seeing me, he
looked frantically around, then quickly
went into the house.
In Game Warden language, this is
called a clue.
Crossing the road immediately, I
knocked on his front door, No response.
But standing there, I noticed several

small spots of blood just outside the
doorway. So, determined to get answers,
I knocked again and again, until a
woman finally answered.
I asked to speak to the man who was
just outside. He came to the door, noticeably
out of breath. When questioned
about the blood outside the house, he
claimed a buddy brought him a deer the
week before. He even invited me in to
check his freezer.
Stepping inside, I found a gambrel
hanging from the ceiling just inside the
doorway, with a deer leg lying beneath it.
I asked where the rest of the carcass was.
The man explained his buddy already
came and got it.
But when asked for this buddy's
name and phone
number, he -
shockingly -
couldn't provide
