HUNTING, TRAPPING & WILDLIFE
Look at any map of State Game Lands 69 and you'll
see a lot of blue representing water. About 654 acres are
classifi ed as wetlands. Two impoundments cover another
124 acres and there are about 275 acres associated with
beaver dams or natural ponds.
Beavers are legal to take through March 31, and there
are abundant opportunities here for waterfowl of all types,
even at this time of year - provided its impoundments
aren't frozen over - since the last segment of the Resident
Population Goose Zone allows hunting from Feb. 2-20.
Otherwise, hunters and trappers can expect whitetailed
deer, turkeys, gray and fox squirrels, ruff ed grouse, woodcocks, red and gray foxes,
black bears, woodchucks, raccoons, muskrats, minks, otters and coyotes.
There's pheasant hunting to be had, too; this game lands gets stocked fi ve times a year.
MANAGEMENT PRIORITIES
Like pretty much all of Crawford County, this area features lots of

silty, loamy soil that's slow to drain.
That's not great if you're a farmer. But - and this is why this game
lands is part of an offi cial Biological Diversity Area - it's terrifi c for wildlife.
Habitat management activities focus on creating and maintaining
early successional forests through commercial and non-commercial
timber harvests; regenerating aspen, herbaceous openings and shrublands;
mowing singing grounds for woodcock and grouse; encouraging
soft mast production through things like apple pruning; food plots;
and alternately drawing down and fl ooding impoundments to provide
food-producing plants. Maintenance of mature hard-mast-producing
trees such as red oak, white oak, scarlet oak, chestnut oak and hickory
is a priority, as well.
To do all that, crews work to suppress the normal complement of
invasive species found locally. That includes things like multifl ora rose,
Asian honeysuckles, autumn olive and reed-canary grass.
Protection of this game lands' many vernal pools, important to
amphibians, is another consideration.
HISTORY & RECREATION
Some state game lands result from the purchase of one
particular property. Many are the result of buying a few
properties.
Not this one. The Game Commission cobbled State Game
Lands 69 together by buying 58 parcels between 1931 and
1993.
Some of those who visit it today come not with fi rearms,
bows or traps, but fi shing rods. The impoundments and
creeks here generate a bit of interest for the warmwater
species swimming within them. This game lands also attracts some hikers and birders,
who come to see some of its 236 documented bird species.
