OR MANY OF US, our fi rst
adventure in the woods came
hunting squirrels.
Pursuing them with a shotgun or
.22 was sort of a rite of passage as we
hunted our way up to bigger game.
Bushytails were important to
my start in hunting. Learning to sit
patiently beside my mentor or quietly
trying to stalk alongside in the
crunchy leaves taught me valuable
lessons about hunting and gun safety.
Throughout those formative years,
I put many a bushytail in the freezer.
Most were common gray squirrels,
but there were a few red squirrels in
the mix, too, particularly when we
hunted vast stands of white pine in
the creek bottoms near home.
As I grew older and focused more
on big game, squirrel hunting took a
back seat. I'd occasionally head out
in the late season, but that was about
it. While squirrels were a common
sight in my hunting areas, I always
seemed to be chasing something else.
During a fall turkey hunt in 2004
my attitude began to change. While
walking the fi rst bench off a mountain
near home, I heard something in the
leaves, running toward me. I knew it
wasn't big enough to be a deer, but it
sounded bigger than a squirrel - or so
I thought.
Suddenly, at the other end of the
downed log where I stood, a fox
squirrel appeared. Without hesitation,
I pulled up the 12-gauge and cut
loose, downing the fi rst fox squirrel

I'd ever seen while hunting.
That experience sort of snapped
me back to squirrel hunting.
Now all I needed was a blackphase
gray squirrel to round out the
four varieties that can be hunted here
in Pennsylvania.
While such black squirrels might
be found in various parts of the state,
northern Pennsylvania always has its
share.
Having traveled to that region to
observe the elk and other wildlife
since the early 1990s, I'd seen a few
along the way, though I'd never given
much thought to hunting them.
Friends who had a camp in Clinton
County told me they'd see a few
black squirrels each year while pursuing
other game. They'd even shot
a few over the years, one of which
was mounted and hung in a place of
prominence on the camp wall.
I hunted from the camp several
times over the span of several years,
but never encountered a black squirrel.
I
must admit, my ambition to take
one waned a bit after that. In the years
to follow, I made a few half-hearted
excursions to the region, always in
the late season, to hunt squirrels.
Weather often limited my access to
spots I wanted to go and, truth be
told, I always ended up looking for
elk more than I did a black squirrel.
In 2016, I was fortunate enough to
draw a cow elk tag. I made it a family
hunt, renting a cabin and having
