many of my relatives up for the week.
I filled my tag on the first day, which
freed up the rest of the week to hunt
other game. One day, upon returning
to camp for lunch, my dad showed
me the black squirrel he'd shot that
morning just outside Benezette.
After a quick bite, my youngest
son and I headed for the hollow
where he'd found it. We waited
there the rest of the day, seeing many
squirrels and a herd of 17 elk. But we
couldn't match Dad's fortune.
That hunt lit the fire under me,
though. I started researching where
black squirrels might be hunted, used
the Internet to look for clues and
made numerous in-season and outof-season
forays to the north woods
to look for one.
While I did see a few, it wasn't
ever when squirrels were in season,
and sometimes they were in places I
couldn't hunt.
I even had other hunters sending
me information.
The editor of this magazine literally
sent me GPS coordinates of areas
he said were promising. Another
friend took me to a place where he'd
taken several black-phase grays over
the years. On one trip, while I was
hunting in one spot, he saw a black
squirrel in another and came and got
me. We then sat there for hours without
seeing one again.
It was as though I was jinxed.
For several years, a group of us
regularly have gone to the area to hunt

in the October muzzleloader season.
I've always packed a shotgun, too.
And on this trip in 2022, I received
a real kick in the gut when, while
out scouting on a Sunday afternoon,
I spotted a black squirrel in a maple
tree in a spot I frequent.
Though I hung out there for most
of the week, I never saw it again.
I made several trips to that location
over the course of the next few
months and never saw the black
squirrel, though I did enjoy taking a
limit of his gray-colored cousins.
On the last trip of the season, I
placed a trail camera in the spot, but
when I picked it up in April, there
wasn't a single photo of a black
squirrel on it.
In 2023, as we once again headed
north to hunt the early muzzleloader
season, I again took my shotgun,
and a handful of No. 5s. I vowed this
would be the year I'd get my black
squirrel, even if I had to put deer
hunting aside to do it.
We always arrive on Sunday, so I
generally just walk and scout. It was
during this trek that I found a spot not
that far from a gated road that was
loaded with deer sign.
I hunted another spot on Monday
morning, though, and from what I
could tell, acorns were abundant and
squirrels were spread out gathering
them.

morning, I was sitting with my
muzzleloader, watching a creek bot
