There I was in Missouri, more years
ago already than seems possible, running
a video camera to capture footage
on the first morning of the first-ever
snow goose conservation order season.
With an estimated 2.5 million birds
roosting in the area, nine hunters took
177 snow geese in just 90 minutes of
hunting. It all made for a great halfhour
hunting show.
Time has passed, though, and harvesting
those white geese is not nearly
that easy these days.
That's as true here as anywhere.
I normally make a few forays each
year to hunt snows with friends in
southeastern Pennsylvania. The results
vary from hunt to hunt, but the spectacle
is always the same: thousands upon
thousands of birds in the air - snow
geese and other waterfowl - flying out
to feed up for the next leg of their long
migration.
To see it is breathtaking. To consistently
take birds out of this growing
population, though, involves a constant
learning process where the lessons
vary from day to day and hour to hour.
The first order of business is to get
out there with the birds. This can mean
hunting anywhere between January
and April, depending upon the weather
and migration. These days, though, it
seems snow geese always can be found
somewhere in Pennsylvania during
winter. As long as there is food and
open water, the birds will make do.
There are several great ways to
keep tabs on snow-goose movement.
One is the Ducks Unlimited migration
map (https://www.ducks.org/migrationmap)
and its associated reports,
which shows what other hunters are
saying. When birds move into a region,
someone usually posts that.
A second way is to monitor the
snow goose livestream from Middle
Creek Wildlife Management Area
through www.pgc.pa.gov. Here, you
literally can see what birds are there in
real time.
Once you know where birds are, get
after them fast. The couple days after
they arrive somewhere are often best,
before hunting pressure teaches them
which places are most dangerous.
But in any case, they might only
stick around for a week or two. And
any days not hunted during this time
are lost for good, so don't wait.
