Why Hunt?
I'm often asked why I hunt, especially by those who don't come from a hunting
background.
It's a complicated question to answer.
I'm like most hunters, I suspect. I've gone through the various stages as a hunter.
Back in the '70s, when small-game hunting was big, a day afield seemed incomplete
if I didn't harvest a limit of two pheasants and four rabbits. Then, when I really became
immersed in deer hunting, if I didn't have a buck by 9 o'clock on the opening morning,
uneasiness would emerge at thoughts of having an unfilled buck tag.
After taking a lot of bucks over the next two decades, and harvesting big game animals
out West, trophy-status became important to me.
I've got one animal in a record book, my Montana pronghorn antelope taken in 1992,
and I can remember how obsessed I was with getting it measured and entered.
Then sometime in the late '90s and early 2000s, I got into acquiring different types
of firearms to hunt with, and took up archery hunting again, this time with a crossbow.
These days, to quote an old cliché, I just enjoy being out there.
I still hunt hard and get out quite a bit, but now pass up more game than I harvest.
Another reason I hunt is, like the majority of hunters, I enjoy game meat. And I
eat everything I shoot, including the merganser I shot one time while hunting on the
Susquehanna River. I enjoy duck breast, but I don't recommend merganser to tickle
the palate. I do recommend elk meat, deer, pheasant, and I'm partial to wife Debbie's
squirrel stroganoff.
A study by Responsive Management, an internationally recognized research firm
specializing in public opinion and attitude related to natural resources and outdoor
recreation, found that 39% of American hunters feel obtaining meat is the most important
reason for hunting.
Other hunters surveyed indicated sport or recreation (27%), spending time with family
and friends (18%), immersion in nature (11%), and seeking a trophy (1%) as their main
reason for hunting.
The motivation of spending time with family and friends emphasizes hunting's
historical relationship with the group: ancient hunting was almost always a group activity,
and hunters in the group would pass on the knowledge of and participation in the activity
to the next generation to ensure survival.
" It takes a hunter to make a hunter " is true even today.
Why do I continue to hunt after 54 seasons pursuing game in 38 of Pennsylvania's
67 counties, and 10 other states? Because I still get butterflies in my stomach when I
hear a bugling bull elk or spring gobbler, watch a buck sneaking through thick cover on
a frosty morning, or have a cackling pheasant flush from a hedgerow within a few feet.
Besides, Debbie's squirrel stroganoff is hard to beat.
