Just before fi rst light we put jake and
hen decoys outside the blind and settled
in. We reviewed fi rearm safety, then
waited.
Not for long, though. Hearing a few
gobbles in the distance at daybreak, I
made a few hen yelps. Within 20 minutes,
a gobbler headed our way. Carter
spotted the longbeard about 75 yards
away, through one of the blind portals.
The bird strutted and gobbled for the
decoys, but wouldn't come any closer.
He answered my calls, but wouldn't
budge. Eventually, the bird drifted away
into the light rain. Dry inside the blind,
sharing homemade venison jerky, Carter
and I talked for a good while, and I was
able to share some of what I've learned
in my 40 years pursuing turkeys.
Then, as Carter peeked through a rear
portal, there, to our surprise, were four
mature toms preening themselves about
35 yards from the blind.
I told Carter to watch how they reacted
to a few soft hen purrs. But they didn't
react to any call I made.
So we decided to turn our chairs
around, with Carter shooting out of the
rear portal after I made a loud cluck that
would hopefully spur the closest turkey
to raise its head.
The plan would have worked, too, except
Carter shot too quickly, and missed.
We watched the bird fl y toward the
woods line 40 yards away. It showed
no signs of being hit. We talked about
Carter's mistake. He was dejected, but
when I asked if he wanted to leave or
stay, he didn't hesitate with an answer.
He wanted to stay.
So we closed the front of the blind and
moved the decoys to the open field, expecting
turkeys would most likely head
there with the rain falling. As we relaxed,
Carter asked me if he might get another

opportunity. There are no certainties in
hunting, I said, and we're fortunate to get
one opportunity per season. But what's
important is the pursuit and enjoyment
of the experience.
With only about an hour left before
quitting time, a hen came into view, feeding
our way. I whispered to Carter to stay
alert. Sure enough, as the hen fed past the
blind, the tips of a gobbler's fanned-out
tail feathers came into view over the rise,
heading toward us.
Carter had his gun up and as the tom
strutted to our jake decoy, I whispered I
would call to get the turkey to raise his
head. When it did, the shotgun roared.
The gobbler went down.
" Let's go, let's go! " Carter said, wanting
to get out of the blind and get his turkey.
Being
patient and persistent allowed
Carter the thrill of two opportunities -
one failure and one success - in one day.
Congratulations, Carter, on your first
spring gobbler!
