SECOND-STEP HUNTS
Rome wasn't built in a day. Neither
is the typical hunter.
One ou� ng might be enough to sow
the seeds of passion for hun� ng.
But it takes longer than that for a
newcomer to acquire the knowledge
and skills necessary to be self-suffi cient
afi eld.
That's not a problem for those hailing
from a hun� ng background, who
can tag along with a parent or grandparent
for days, months, even years.
But those without such connec� ons
must learn other ways.
That's where the Game Commission's
" second-step hunts " come in.
Off ered for the fi rst � me last fall,
they are opportuni� es for " graduates "
of past John Heinz and Benjamin Rush
hunts - with as li� le as one day of hunting
experience behind them - to hunt
squirrels or deer at Middle Creek Wildlife
Management Area.
They s� ll had a mentor by their side.
But they learned more advanced skills,
like how to set up and use tree stands,
use fi rearms, scout, process game in
the fi eld and more, all while taking a
more ac� ve role in their own success
or failure.
It's a big jump from par� cipa� ng in
a mentored hunt to heading out alone
onto a state game lands spanning thousands
of acres, said Courtney LaCivita,
Game Commission
Hunter-Trapper
Educa� on and Outreach Division Chief.
" So I guess we're trying to make the
jumps a li� le bit smaller, " LaCivita said.
That's also why the Game Commission
runs a Facebook group open only
to hunters and mentors who have gone
through its special hunts. It's a resource
where newcomers can ask ques� ons
without feeling overwhelmed.
" If we truly want to make people
lifelong hunters, we have to be there
for them every step of the way, " LaCivita
said. " We're crea� ng bonds. "

can simply show up the day of a hunt
and hope to fi ll any vacancies - looking
for another. It's an exercise that
taught him to be still unlike any other.
" I have ADHD and the fi rst time my
dad came to watch me hunt, we sat for
maybe 10 hours, just completely still, "
Victor said. " And he was like, 'Victor,
are you sure you have ADHD? Are
you sure?'
" I said, I don't know, are you? "
His grandfather, Melvin Esh, also
a Philadelphia resident, thrills to see
Victor outside. He was a hunter once,
though no more.
" But it's fun to come out with Victor
and sit out there, " he said. " I bring
my book. But it's a lot of fun just to be
out and see his excitement. "
Hunting at Benjamin Rush was a
fi rst for Philadelphia's Ibrahim Salami.
