asks participants about their motivations
for getting involved. Many, regardless
of whether they're from the
area's wealthiest ZIP codes or poverty-ridden
ones, cite a parent or grandparent
who fished in years past.
Hunting exerts the same pull, he
believes.
" So if anything, through these mentored
hunts, we're bringing back to
these diverse urban areas what culturally
has always been there, " Pride said.
" While there are a lot of people, I'm
going to say black, white and brown,
who never hunted before, there's a
significant percentage of them with
someone in their family who did. "
One such person is the Philadelphia-born
Stephen Drain. His mother
hails from North Carolina, where his
grandmother had a farm. They fished;
whether they also hunted he's not sure.
" But I always wanted to hunt, and
I picked up archery as my Covid hobby, "
he said. " I got pretty good and
said, I should try to hunt because I fish
and I also wanted to learn how to trap.
So I saw the opportunity and thought,
let me try to learn as much as I can. "
He hunted for the first time at John
Heinz in 2022. The experience was
" amazing " enough that he returned
this past fall, one of five former mentees
back as mentors in training.
" I didn't learn this stuff previously,
but it's in my blood, " Drain said. " I
like being outside. I spend most of my
time outdoors; hiking, camping, that's
my thing. And I'm also really conscious
about what I eat. So if I could
become a subsistence hunter, learn
how to butcher all my own food, that's
a goal. "
Just how many of the hunters that

Rush hunts become long-term
hunters,
and/or
recruit
family to join them, is still a question.
LaCivita said the Game Commission
is working to track that.
There's no doubt, though, that the
state's urban and suburban areas -
which are growing all the time - offer
great potential for swelling hunting's
ranks, Commissioner Pride said.
License sales data - here in Pennsylvania
and across the country - show
people are more likely to be hunters if
they grow up in rural areas. However,
LaCivita noted, about 75% of Pennsylvanians
live in urban and suburban
ones.
" So if our goal is to recruit new
hunters, then we need go where the
people are, " LaCivita said.
Pride agreed and said that's why
these hunts are potentially so powerful.
" What
we're doing with these John
Heinz and Benjamin Rush hunts is,
while the numbers are small, we're
opening up the knowledge that these
kinds of opportunities exist, " he said.
