eat some breakfast before we left camp.
We reached our hunting spot just as
the sun was starting to rise and the woods
were coming alive with songbirds caroling
everywhere. Conditions were perfect,
clear and calm. As we approached
the area where we planned to sit, Jordan
worked his call. He had been practicing
for weeks and sounded pretty good.
A turkey thought so, too. He immediately
let loose with a thunderous gobble,
less than a hundred yards in front of us,
causing us both to jump. Scrambling,
we put our backs to a large tree and got
ready.
I hoped Jordan's turkey hunt was going
to be quick and easy, but for whatever
reason - maybe that gobbler saw us
or a real hen interfered - we never saw or
heard a sound from him again.
So after an hour, needing to stretch

Kane, recently sent this photo, captured
a few seasons back on a trail
camera he runs with son Dan Jordan.
They � tled it, " A friendly chat by the
cornfi eld. " They were able to harvest
one of the bears later that year,
and it weighed in at 350 pounds.
our legs, we walked to a nearby pipeline,
with Jordan calling every hundred
yards or so to see if we could get the attention
of another lovesick gobbler. We
went about half a mile before getting an
answer.
" Did you hear that, Papa? " he asked.
I had. The bird was a long way off , but
we set up again, a large tree at my back
and Jordan between my legs, his shotgun
across his lap. Then I took over the calling
duties, really hammering away given
how far off the bird seemed.
To our surprise, not one but two gobblers
answered. The fi rst was that longdistance
bird, but the second was much
closer.
" Wow, Papa. Two of them! " Jordan
said, craning his neck to look up at me.
I called sparingly now, as the birds
continued working our way. Suddenly,
there was movement over my left shoulder.
At fi rst, the black forms seemed to
be turkeys coming from behind us.
But it was two small bear cubs, neither
of which could have weighed more
than 15 pounds. I moved my right hand
in front of Jordan, pointing to the left. He
turned just in time to see the sow step
out of the thick brush. There were now
three bears just to our left, about 30 yards
away.
Jordan was so excited that both he
and his shotgun were shaking. And to
tell you the truth, I might have been just
a little, too.

Then the closer turkey gobbled. That
not only brought our attention back to
the task at hand, but prompted the sow
to stand up on her hind legs to search
for the calling bird. One of her cubs followed
suit, to get a better look around.
" Why are they standing on their hind
legs, Papa? " Jordan asked in a whisper.
I told him they were looking for break
