HUNTING, TRAPPING & WILDLIFE
State Game Lands 313 is not your average " big woods "
kind of place. Historically known as the " Stokesdale Marsh "
and part of a larger area referred to as " The Muck, " it's a
large wetland complex that holds bird species typically only
found in the northwestern part of the state or elsewhere
with similar habitat.
That drives what hunting occurs. There are white-tailed
deer and eastern cottontail rabbits in limited number, and
they do get a little bit of hunting pressure. More commonly
pursued, though, are Canada geese and other waterfowl,
such as wood ducks, mallards, teals and pintails. Trapping
is also popular, primarily for muskrats.
Part of two Biodiversity Areas, as defi ned in the Tioga County Natural Heritage Inventory,
and located entirely within Important Bird and Mammal areas, this game lands supports
many other birds, including the endangered American bittern and threatened least bittern.

acres worth - cover about 96% of this game lands. Given how unique
that is locally, the overall goal for State Game Lands 313 is to manage
for wetlands habitat.
That involves promoting native cattail marshes, which provide a
variety of species with cover for nesting and foraging. Invasive species
are the biggest obstacle. Purple loosestrife already are so widespread
that eradication is unlikely. But eff orts are being made to treat it using
herbicides, beetles and other tools.
The Game Commission is also maintaining the areas of late successional
habitat that exist to provide nesting, roosting and escape
cover. Those woods also act as a buff er between private farmland and
the wetlands.
Fruit and other mast-producing trees are also managed for on the
upland portions of the game lands.
HISTORY & RECREATION
The wetlands on SGL 313 formed as a result of glacial
advance and retreat. That deposited layers of rich organic
soil that farmers once tried to capitalize on.
This area was used for celery and lettuce farming until the
late 1940s, when competition from other growers, rising labor
and transportation costs, a fl ood that increased water levels,
and enhanced wetland protection laws left those operations
unprofi table. Evidence of that history remains visible today,
though, through irrigation and drainage channels.
The Game Commission began acquiring this property starting in the early 1990s. Today,
in addition to hunters and trappers, birders come here. There's even a trail with a wildlife
observation blind near the one parking lot for the public to use.
