thing that most often accounts for an
opportunity missed - is movement. Turkeys
catch any and all movement. "
That's where a blind can come in
handy.
There are rules that specify what's a
legal blind and what isn't - they must
be constructed completely of manmade
materials and completely conceal a
hunter, even from above, for example -
but they're helpful in certain situations.
Casalena likes to use one when fi eld
hunting.
But they're also good, she noted,
in inclement weather, for young hunters
and others who may struggle to sit
still for extended periods of time, and
for multiple hunters - say a mentor and
mentee - hunting together.
" They're also good for later in the
season when bugs can be a problem, "
Casalena said. " During that all-day portion
of the season, you can even take a
nap inside the blind while waiting for
some afternoon activity. Just don't fall
asleep too long, as the turkeys may
come in quietly! "
HARVEST TOTALS
The last several years of good turkey
recruitment have been good for spring
gobbler hunters, as seen by harvests
trending up.
Pennsylvania's es� mated 2021 spring
gobbler harvest was 28,089. It climbed
in 2022, to 35,738, then went up again in
2023, to 39,524.
All told, almost 20% of spring gobbler
hunters - one in fi ve - harvested a bird in
2023. That was up a bit over 2022 and signifi
cantly over 2021, when the statewide
hunter success rate was closer to 15%.
Here's the harvest
for those three
years, 2021-2023, broken down by Wildlife
Management Unit. Note that the
totals include WMU 2H, which has since
been rolled into WMU 2G. Addi� onally,
some turkeys harvested each year are
reported by hunters who weren't sure
which WMU they were in. Those harvests
are not refl ected in the list below.
