There was a time when going into a
discuss some choices.
gun shop to buy a new rifl e meant leaving
with blued steel stocked in wood,
most often some variety of walnut.
Not so much today.
Now, rifl es often are made of stainless
steel with a matte black fi nish and a
black or camo plastic stock. These newer
rifl es are no less durable than their older
counterparts, but with their hollow plastic
stocks, they lack eye appeal for many.
Yet, all is not lost for the traditionalists
among us.
I'm a fan - even a minor-league collector
- of the Remington Model 700.
One of my rifl es is a CZ 457 Match Target
Rifl e with a factory Turkish walnut
stock. Nothing can compare with the
beauty and warmth of wood like that.
But such stocks pose two potential
problems, too. First, damaging one under
any circumstances can bring tears to
your eyes. And second, in warm, humid
weather particularly, they are prone to
warpage that can produce uneven pressure
on the sides of the barrel, eff ecting
the rifl e's point of impact.
Fortunately, the " stock market " off ers
more potential stock materials than just
plastic or high-end wood. We don't have
the space here to cover them all. But I'll

Laminated stocks are one. They're
stiff , durable and actually - to many
people, anyway - attractive. They're
fashioned by pressing and gluing together
layers of hardwoods, either different
shades of the same color or a
combination of contrasting colors. That
yields interesting patterns of " fi gure. "
Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks of
Mitchell, S.D., makes several for the
Remington Model 700BDL alone, some
featuring thumbholes, in 14 color combinations.
Being somewhat conservative,
my fi rst Boyd's stock was the Prairie
Hunter in Nutmeg. It comes, if you
so choose, with an optional LimbSaver
recoil pad and laser-engraved ribbon
panel checkering.
I have at least a half-dozen Boyd's
stocks for rimfi re and centerfi re rifl es
and each one has been a strictly dropin
proposition. I was able to speak with
two ladies from Boyd's at the NRA
Great American Outdoor Show in Harrisburg
a few years ago and they are just
as pleasant and knowledgeable in person
as they are over the phone.
I also have a laminated stock for
heavy barrels off ered by Keystone
Sporting Arms, a Milton, Pa., company.
