Desperate Times

Y FIRST realish job was washing dishes on busy holidays in a high-end
restaurant. It wasn't as bad as you might think.
It was generally worse.
Desperation put me there. Three years into my hunting career, I hadn't killed a
buck. That was troublesome enough. It's hard to project a believable Davy Crockett
vibe when all your stories swirl around missed opportunities and outright skunkings.
But I didn't even look the part.
Everyone in our group, even cousins only slightly older, had their own deer rifles.
That their supposed lethality was often based on no factual evidence made little difference.
Meanwhile,
I annually borrowed a single-shot, iron-sighted affair with two barrels
- a 16-gauge for small game and a .30-30 for big - you swapped out based on season.
There was nothing wrong with it except it wasn't mine.
So my goal was to buy a lever action Marlin 336C. Scouring catalogs - even J.C.
Penney sold guns then - looking for the best deal made clear my need for a paycheck.
This one involved scraping food off dirty plates, blasting them with a hose, then
putting them in racks on a giant conveyer. It looped around into an enclosed washing
station that moments later belched them back out in a hot, raging steam cloud.
Left as wet as them, I'd grab a heavy pile and stagger across the kitchen, dodging
wait staff, salad makers, busboys and entertainers, like the singing priests who took
the stage only after fortified with samples of prime rib.
When I got behind, chefs yelled.
" Plates! Plates! I need clean plates over here! "
At that, Stella, the full-time dishwasher, would look up from scouring pots and
pans in the sink. Short, stout, grandmotherly - provided your grandmother was a
Viking warlord who promised her horde of looters and pillagers only the chance to
live and die like dogs - she was mostly soft except for her forearms. Those, an angry
red from near-constant immersion in hot water, were one anchor tattoo away from
being Popeye-like.
Squinting through fogged-up glasses, she'd shout encouragement my way.
" Geez, kid, what's your problem? Pick up the pace! "
But this place paid - more than minimum wage - in cash stuffed into my hand each
night's end. So I kept at it through every holiday from Christmas to Father's Day. If
people were out celebrating, I was there, too, scrapin' and blastin' and sweatin.'
By summer I got a Marlin. By fall I got a buck. Was it all worth it?
I'll bet even Davy Crockett would have said yes.
