HUNTING, TRAPPING & WILDLIFE
White-tailed deer, black bears, turkeys, gray and fox
squirrels, raccoons, coyotes, fi shers and red and gray foxes
are among the species commonly hunted on this game
lands. There are some beavers, minks, muskrats and bobcats,
too. It also gets stocked with pheasants - birds are
released six times over the course of the season - and holds
various waterfowl and doves seasonally.
There's an important bat hibernaculum here, known as
the Templeton Mine, with large numbers of bats, including
the federally endangered Indiana bat. It's gated against
entry for their benefi t.
Notable songbirds found include wood thrushes, Kentucky
warblers, American fl ycatchers and Louisiana waterthrushes. There's a great blue
heron rookery, as well, and American woodcocks show up on occasion.

intense scale. There are some very steep hillsides located along Mahoning
Creek and the Allegheny River.
Elsewhere on SGL 287, though, the Game Commission is using a mix
of commercial timber sales, meaning those where someone pays the
agency to cut and harvest trees, and non-commercial sales, meaning
those where the agency might pay someone to cut and remove trees,
to create wildlife habitat. The goal is to manage for mixed successional
habitat, with an emphasis, too, on enhancing unique riparian buff ers.
Conifers - spruce, pine and hemlock - are planted in groups where
space allows to provide winter thermal cover,
Herbaceous openings planted in multi-season and perennial forbs
provide for early successional habitat - food, nesting and brooding
cover, especially - in border areas. Such " old fi eld " habitat is important
to multiple species of wildlife.
The Game Commission plants fruit trees here, too.
HISTORY & RECREATION
The Game Commission bought the fi rst 1,800-plus
acres of what became this game lands in 1974, with all
but about 8 of those purchased from Neville Land Co.
It added to it in a series of additional deals stretching
from 1975 to 2002. Much of the land was previously used
for strip mining or growing crops. Some was always
wooded, though, while more has always been riverine
bottomlands. A railroad once ran through, too.
There are a number of working gas wells on SGL 287,
and the gated roads maintained for them and other management activities provide nice
avenues for hiking, bird-watching and other recreation. There's also a boat ramp off ering
access to a tract of this game lands from the Allegheny River in Templeton.
