Some things can test your affection for
wildlife. Gardening is one.
Years ago, we lived near Halifax,
Dauphin County, renting the vacant parsonage
from a Mennonite church. The
modest house was well-kept and spotlessly
clean, as was the yard, surrounded
by cropland with not a shred of weeds or
woods within a quarter mile. Not even the
shade from the sycamores along Route
147 darkened the plot I tilled and planted.
That loamy topsoil, bathed in full
sun, nurtured vegetables of a quality and
volume I've never seen equaled, so far
from cover that no uninvited creature ever
pilfered a nibble. The only wild things to
enter my garden were bluebirds. They
perched atop tomato stakes and swooped
to pluck cabbage worms off the burgeoning
heads.
That place and its benevolent thrushes
left a gardener spoiled.
Since then, we've lived far to the west,
among wooded ridges where the setting
and climate present a different horticultural
reality. Besides reluctant clay, the
limiting factor here is sunlight, most of
which is intercepted by oaks, maples and
cucumber magnolias which, admittedly,
we enjoy as much as a ripe tomato. So,
I've scattered small, raised beds around,
anywhere the rays evade the canopy for
a few hours each day.
But here, I'm not the only resident with
a taste for plump beans. Deer, groundhogs
and rabbits shelter in the forest that
crowds my plots. Unimpeded, these don't
even wait for pods to form. They mow
down the seedlings upon emergence.
The obvious defense is fencing, not
difficult to erect around my small plots,
each defined by castoff railroad ties I've
gleaned and hauled home.
Deer aren't hard to deter. They're
capable of vaulting much higher obstacles
yet aren't motivated to jump my 5-foot
plastic mesh. I've wondered if my plots
were bigger, offering more forage, would
deer leap the barrier. My guess is they
would. Deer likely run some cervine
cost-benefit analysis; are those few bean
sprouts worth the leap?
But I'm dealing with nature, trying to
grow something alien, for my satisfaction,
in a place flush with opportunists,
all with a different agenda. Installing an
