By filling DMAP tags in areas where
CWD exists, hunters can help the Game
Commission learn more about CWD
impacts. Hunters who harvest deer
in these areas can get them tested for
CWD for free by dropping the deer's
head in a nearby collection bin, which
are mapped online.
Game Commission Executive Director
Steve Smith encouraged hunters to
take advantage of these additional opportunities,
and thanked them for their
valuable assistance.
" Hunters who secure tags, harvest
deer and submit them for testing play
an active role in helping to monitor
CWD, " Smith said. " And the free CWD
testing the Game Commission offers
allows hunters to make an informed
decision before consuming venison. "
Rainfall relieves
ban on campfires
The Pennsylvania Game Commission in
November briefly enacted a temporary ban
on building campfires on state game lands,
but the ban remained in place for less than
three weeks.
The ban was enacted Nov. 5, in a time when
more than half of the state's counties were
experiencing drought conditions and wildfires
were becoming an increasing problem because
of them. The weeks that followed, though,
brought enough rainfall to reduce wildfire
concerns and lift the ban. That happened on
Nov. 22.
The state Department of Conservation
and Natural Resources, which had enacted a
similar campfire ban within state forests and
state parks, lifted its ban on that date, as well.
While camping is prohibited on state game
lands, game lands users are permitted to build
small fires for cooking or warming purposes.
When the threat of forest fire exists, however,
the Game Commission's executive director
may restrict otherwise-permitted activity,
which possibly made a difference in this case.
BACK BREAKER
The November issue of Game News
featured a story about two friends
who have packed out a number of
smaller bears by carrying them fielddressed
on their backs, much like a
backpack.
That wasn't a realistic option this
year, when Patrick Jordan, of Middleburg,
arrowed this 545-pounder in
Sullivan County on Oct. 24.
In the November story, Jordan
noted that he and his bear crew often
talked about what they'd do with a really
big bear, which to that point they'd
never had to worry with. It would
depend on the bear's size, he said.
Now there's some insight into the
matter, as Jordan's hefty bear was
brought out with a tractor.
Maybe the next bear will be smaller!
