Unbelievably, 80 yards away, there
were our elk.
Dropping to one knee, I tried getting
them in my sights, with my rifl e propped
on shooting sticks. But the angle was too
steep. Dropping the sticks to rest the gun
on my knee instead, I found a cow in
the scope but couldn't get a clear shot.
I shifted right, Jake doing the same, in
leaves quiet from morning rain, looking
for an opening.
Jake found one fi rst, so I slid his way.
It was really steep there, though - too
steep to kneel - so I got into a sitting position
along the trail's edge, my feet and
shooting sticks downslope.
Unfortunately, putting my gun on my
shooting sticks broke a stick under one
of the legs. The cow heard that and stood
straight up to look at me, but didn't run,
making her a bigger target. Jake told me
to shoot when ready.
I moved the
crosshairs behind
her shoulder, took off my safety and
pulled the trigger.
Click!
I had a round in the chamber,
right? Yes. I put my safety back on,
slid back the bolt and ejected a shell.
It had been a misfi re. Of all the times!
I racked another round in and got
back on the cow, which had shifted
to be broadside to me, but with more
cover between us. I struggled to settle
the sights on her until calming back
down. It all took maybe 10 to 15 seconds.
Boom!
This time the rifl e fi red.
" Hit, " Jake said. " Looked good. "
The elk took off , though, bolting
downhill. We discussed the shot and
her reaction for a while before we
slid down the severe slope to look for
blood. When we got to where the elk
had been, I looked ahead and saw an

elk standing there, looking back at me. I
raised my rifl e, all but sure this elk was
the same one I'd shot, but I let her walk
off , just in case.
There was a lot of blood indicative of
a lung shot, though, so Jake was confi -
dent we'd get her if we gave her some
time.
It would take one more shot, broadside
at 30 yards, but I put her down for
good.
Jake and I were ecstatic and relieved,
to say the least. We took pictures, fi elddressed
her, collected the samples the
Game Commission takes for testing,
then called for help. My elk was one of
two taken that day - the other was the
big bull mentioned earlier - so spirits in
camp were very high.
But if I had to do it again, I'd keep my
dates straight and answer my phone.
