But even on a preserve hunt, muzzleloader
shotgunning is tricky.
When you're not familiar with percussion
caps under the hammers and firechannel
tubes commonly called nipples,
things don't always work as planned.
Caps slide off nipples as hunters crash
through switchgrass, fingers forget to pull
back hammers, and fast-escaping birds
outpace the necessarily-longer lead times
of blackpowder guns.
But we sure did have a lot of smoky
fun!
This figured to be different, though.
The birds were obviously there on
my farm, given my earlier observation.
Whether they were there thanks to lateseason
Game Commission stockings or
private releases wasn't clear.
Getting one, though, might require me
to first break an old habit. Namely, I'd
have to remember hens now are legal to
take, In my younger days, pheasant hunting
was limited to roosters only.
It took two hens flushing and escaping
without a shot for me to remember to pull
the trigger.
The third wasn't so lucky. A load
of No. 5 chilled shot brought it down,
shortly after it burst from sweet fern
cover growing under a powerline.
If shooting a hen felt weird, it surely
tasted as good as any cockbird ever did.
Later, in February, I went pheasant
hunting again, this time in the fields surrounding
Blue Marsh Lake.
Despite all of the small
game habitat there, and all
the birds, and the fact school
was canceled - courtesy of
8 inches of fresh snow - I
didn't see another hunter.
That's too bad.
If you've never witnessed
a ringneck exploding
from heavy snow cover,
you've missed one of hunting's
greatest memories.
The only better one is
watching feathers float
down on the snow as a
white cone of blackpowder
smoke drifts slowly away.
While roosters long have been
legal to harvest during open
pheasant seasons, the author
had to remind himself that
taking hens now was legal in
pursuing the pheasants that
made their way to his farm.
