But that was my situation.
The forecast called for likely snow on
Tuesday and a chance of rain on Saturday,
and as the Super Bowl LVIII scoreboard
see-sawed back and forth toward
overtime, and ultimately a Chiefs win, I
sought my boss' approval to take a vacation
day Monday.
I wouldn't regret it.
With my postgame bedtime around
midnight, it was nice to wake without an
alarm. And I had some rabbits soaking
in brine that needed deboned - an enjoyable
morning task when not pressed for
time. The dogs and I were working cover
by 11 a.m., returning to a spot where
we'd taken a limit a little more than a
week ago.
We were just easing into one of the
many areas here we hadn't pestered on
our previous trip when Eddie opened up.
" That was fast, " I thought.
Just as quickly, a rabbit - moving
briskly, but not really running - scurried
by about 20 feet from me. I admired
him as he passed, and the dogs soon followed.
Walking
to a nearby trail, I hoped to
meet the rabbit on his return.
The chase was more than a mere

to where the chase had ended to regroup
with the dogs.
Just that fast, Betty opened up, so
quickly I wondered if they'd driven the
rabbit out of his hole.
As the chase unfolded, it seemed clear
this was a diff erent rabbit covering a different
area. His fi rst circle brought him
back in my direction, but short of my
setup, so I scooted ahead to move into
that spot.
Waiting there, though, I repeatedly
listened to the dogs trace circles nowhere
close to me.
I was clearly out of position, standing
on a trail, looking up into a patch of
woods, a grass fi eld at my back. Churning
over thoughts on what to do next, not
really thinking about what I was doing
right now, I glanced to the left and saw a
rabbit running at me down the trail, from
an unexpected direction.
He pulled to a stop and drew his eyes
toward me. I stood there fl at-footed, unable
to move without spooking him, as
he bounded into the woods.
