this alone time, where, in the calm, I

of distant dogs, a train more than 10
miles away, and a few noises not readily
identifi able.
It's hard to put into words the feelings
such moments bring, but there's
something special about occasionally
experiencing those times on your own,
without anyone else around.
Walking across the cut and disced
cornfi eld was challenging. The mud
nearly sucked the boots off my feet, and
with the additional weight of the decoy
bags, it took much longer to reach the
blind than when things were frozen.
That was OK with me, though. It

Conditions were such that we felt
the birds should be on the move, so we
were surprised at the lull that went on
for over an hour. The air was empty except
for crows and songbirds.
Eventually, though, as I looked to
the left, I spotted the next bird of the
day. It was fl ying in from a great distance,
cupping its wings and silently
gliding in on the wind for the last sevthinking
about the wait.
I had most of the gear in
place when the others began
arriving. By the time they
reached the blind all was set.
