gun shoots at stationary targets. But
when hunting or target shooting, you
are usually shooting a moving gun at
moving targets and many of us just do
something diff erent mechanically when
we do that.
Adjusting my trap gun to print a
common 60/40 or even 70/30 pattern
(where 70% of the pellets impacted
above the point of aim) meant shooting
poorly. My guns had to be set so the
lowest pellet holes in my patterning
board targets were 14 inches above the
aiming point - or 135% high!
Obviously, I do something diff erent
on moving targets. Surely, others must
do the same.
That highlights the importance of an
adjustable comb. Just like the rear sight
on your rifl e, it can move your shotgun's
rear sight (your eye) to accommodate
windage and elevation adjustments.
Pennsylvania is home to more
trapshooters than just about anywhere,
and clay target shooters are generally
helpless tinkerers, so certainly there's
someone local to you who can make
that modifi cation. The cost isn't hateful,
either, especially when compared to the
benefi ts you receive.
Of course, hollow plastic stocks are
not as easily modifi ed as solid wood ones,
but aff ordable and attractive replacement
stocks and matching forends are readily
available from various vendors.
Finally, the butt of the stock deserves
mention as well. The butt should rest
in the natural pocket that forms in your
shoulder, rather than on your clavicle
or on the ball of your shoulder. But
here's the problem. Raise your arm as if
mounting your gun and, with the other
hand, feel that pocket. You'll notice it's
not vertical; rather it slopes outward
toward your armpit.
Your gun's butt is vertical, though.
So, if you are going to shoot your
shotgun a lot and want the most consistent
and comfortable mount, the recoil pad
should be made adjustable too.
The rule of thumb for stock length is
that your control hand thumb should be
about an inch from your nose with the
gun mounted. I shot better with a bit less
gap while others prefer a little more, but
an inch will get you in the right ballpark.
From there, fi ne tune things with
recoil pads of diff erent thicknesses.
I keep two pads in my Beretta's case,
switching them out based on seasonal
clothing changes.
Get your stock cut to the right length,
have the comb and butt made adjustable,
and your stock will fi t.
And remember this: if you have

can be adjusted again later to fi t someone
else in the coming years, someone like
your growing child, perhaps? Food for
