Treat buck, tempted with a Montana
Decoy doe and taken with

The result? Just when you
think you've seen it all in the deer
woods, you fi nd you haven't. After
more than 50 years roaming Penn's
Woods in search of whitetail deer,
I witnessed something never
encountered before.
I
settled into my stand just
before daylight, my decoy this time
still intact. Once the sun came up, I
grunted and soon heard something
creeping up behind me. It was a
respectable 8-point buck - but not
quite as big as a few others I'd set
my sights on - so he was free to
safely come and go.
dawn the next morning, discovered it
had already worked its magic a little too
well. Sometime overnight a jealous buck
attacked it, breaking it into four pieces
- front leg, back leg, torso and antlers
- that were spread out over 20 feet or
more. There were also assorted gouges
in the decoy's body, compliments of the
charging buck's antlers. It had apparently
been a very violent attack.
I reassembled the decoy, set it back up
and attached a trail camera to a nearby
tree in hopes of catching any subsequent
attacks on video. Sure enough, it was
again smashed the next morning.
Unfortunately, the trail cam didn't
work, then or on any of the following
three nights, all of which ended with the
decoy torn to pieces.
Whatever was devastating my decoy,
it never showed up during daytime. Not
seeing any deer, I moved to another
hunting property, taking my decoy with
me.

The buck cautiously approached.
At 15 yards he caught sight of the 3-D
target barely 5 yards from my stand. He
immediately turned and strode toward it
with fi re in his eye, stopping face to face
with it to intimidatingly stare it down.
That standoff persisted for about 10
seconds.
Then, after briefl y backing off a step
or two, the buck suddenly charged my
ill-fated decoy and ferociously rammed
it into the ground. Even then, he wasn't
done. He backed off again, then quickly
executed the coup de grâce via another
violent assault with shattering eff ects.
Only then did the feisty buck swagger
away, satisfi ed, into the woodlot.
That was quite a show a mere stone's
throw from my stand. The rutting buck's
merciless ferocity and power was
impressive.
But a curious thing occurred about
a half-hour later. A red fox happened
upon the scene and, for whatever reason,
