Not your Common Robin

weren't sure what they were seeing
initially.
It was spring of 2021 and the couple,
who live on the outskirts of Nicktown
in Cambria County, were watching the
birds in their yard, which is surrounded
by woods. One in particular stood out.
The size and shape of a robin, it was
splotched all over with white.
" We thought maybe it was a combination
of a robin and something else, "
Pauline said.
So they took some pictures and did
some investigating. They learned the
bird was indeed a robin, but one exhibiting
leucism, which the Cornell Lab of
Ornithology defi nes as " defects in pigment
cells that are caused during development.
" This
may result in full leucism,
where there is a reduction in all types
of pigment, " says the Lab. " An animal
with full leucism will appear paler than

normal. Leucistic animals may also
show irregular patches of white. This is
referred to as partial leucism, and these
animals are often referred to as 'pied' or
'piebald.' "
Unlike albinos, which have pink eyes
and skin, leucistic animals retain normal
eye and skin color, adds the National
Audubon Society.
Mark, who hunts and is outdoors a lot,
certainly never saw another bird like this
one.
" I've seen white squirrels and deer
and this and that, but this was a fi rst for a
white bird, " he noted.
That's not surprising. Leucism is rare
in birds, with some estimates suggesting
it occurs in just 0.5% to 1% of individuals,
" though local populations may have
higher occurrence rates, " said Game
Commission Avian Recovery Biologist
Stefan Karkuff .
It's not necessarily more common in
robins than other birds, he added, but it
