P ersonal experience with PKD, concern for
family members and their children, and
the desire to help friends facing the everyday
challenges of living with PKD are a few reasons
our readers want to #endPKD.
What if you could make a large, long-lasting
gift that could help those you care about
and future generations? Better yet, what if it
didn't reduce your assets or cost you anything
right now?
You can help us discover treatments and a
cure by making the PKD Foundation a benefi -
ciary of your retirement account, life insurance
policy, donor-advised fund, or investment
account. To get started, you can download or
ask your advisor for a benefi ciary designation
form the next time you access any of your
accounts. Forms are generally simple and
straightforward, and easy to complete within a
matter of minutes.
Designating the PKD Foundation as a benefi
ciary of any of these accounts comes with
several advantages:
* These assets are excluded from inheritance
and capital gains taxes.
* Assets won't be included in a lengthy probate,
making transfer upon death easy, only
requiring a death certifi cate. This is particularly
important if you don't have a will.
* You have the ability to name multiple benefi
ciaries and split up assets as you wish.
* You retain control of your assets.
Wills and bequests are other options for
consideration. Again, these do not reduce
your asset base, but will let you share how you
would like to have your estate split so you can
take care of your family and philanthropic priorities.
While there may be a cost to creating
your will, it will be far less than the costs of a
lengthy probate and potential taxes. You again
retain the control over your assets and, with
some fi nancial planning, can lessen capital
gains and inheritance taxes.
Finally, some states also allow you to use a
Transfer on Death (TOD) to designate a deed of
property to a charity. Please check with your
attorney to see if this is available in your state.
As you manage your various insurance and
investment accounts throughout the year,
consider making the Foundation a benefi ciary
or including us in your will. You can create a
lasting legacy of hope for the future.
We do suggest you notify us of your intent,
so you can enjoy our appreciation, and that of
PKD families everywhere, now. It also helps us
assure your philanthropic intentions are met
in a timely fashion.
