PKDLIFE RECIPE
Baked beans are a popular summer side dish,
and making them in an electric pressure cooker
like the Instant Pot saves time and keeps your
kitchen cooler. Laura Wilson, R.D., C.D.N., C.D.E.,
a registered dietitian at Yale New Haven Health
System's Center for Nutrition and Wellness
who works with people with PKD, says this lowsodium,
high-fi ber recipe " makes a nice complement
to any picnic or summer cookout. "

of the disease, we
won't have a clearer picture
of all of the risks and benefi ts
for a few years, so we have
to be cautious about recommending
the keto diet for
people with PKD until we
have more data from clinical
trials, " he says.
One concern is that eating
so much fat may raise your
cholesterol levels, which
would increase your risk of
developing cardiovascular
disease. While some recent
studies have shown that keto
diets can have a benefi cial
eff ect on cardiovascular disease,
Dr. Rahbari says, " one

ease, Dr. Rahbari says, " one
needs to understand that
people have traditionally
done the keto diet for weight
loss. We know that obesity
is a major risk factor for cardiovascular
events, so losing
weight even at the expense of
causing ketosis, and dealing
with its consequences, may
have been benefi cial overall. "

concern. " The keto diet can

stones, and people with PKD
are already at greater risk of
kidney stones, " she says.
THE BOTTOM LINE
If you'd like to try the keto diet,
talk to your doctor fi rst. (Dr.
Rahbari recommends participating
in a clinical trial where
you can be carefully monitored
for all potential risks.)
If your doctor determines
that it's safe for you (the diet
is not appropriate for patients
in the later stages of PKD,
for example), they will likely
recommend you follow a version
of the diet with a lower
percentage of calories from
fat, and that you undergo
more frequent blood testing to
ensure that your cholesterol
levels stay in a healthy range.
It's also important to work with
a registered dietitian who's
experienced in renal disease
and knowledgeable about
modifying the keto diet for
people with PKD.
