The Pacific Biosciences Research Center offers research mentoring and educational training opportunities to undergraduate, graduate, and PhD students alike; nearly half of UH Manoa's undergraduate training programs are connected with the center. The research unit comprises three facilities - the Békésy Neurobiology Laboratory, the Center for Conservation Research and Training, and the Kewalo Marine Laboratory, investigating topics ranging from molecular biology to sustainability science. In June, the research center was the site of a two-day workshop - sponsored by an NSF Foundation grant - that addressed the underrepresentation of Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders in STEM-focused college programs and careers. UH Manoa is also home to the Hawai'inuiakea School of Hawaiian Knowledge, the only indigenous college in a large research university. The college offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in both Hawaiian language and Hawaiian culture through the Kawaihuelani Center for Hawaiian Language and the Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies, respectively. Hawai'inuiakea also encompasses the Ka Papa Lo'i O Kanewai Cultural Garden, home to a variety of native Hawaiian plants, and provides immersive educational experiences in Hawaiian agriculture and customs. Hawai'inuiakea's Native Hawaiian Student Services is a fantastic resource for Native Hawaiian students. In addition to providing academic advising, tutoring, and resource centers, the office provides financial aid and scholarship information, tips and time line suggestions for scholarship applications, and an annual scholarship workshop. It also facilitates events and outreach programs for the benefit of Native Hawaiian students and prospective students. When they aren't studying or conducting research, UH Manoa students can relax on world-class beaches, swim through stunning coral reefs, and explore lush tropical rain forests. With an average daily temperature of 77 degrees, Oahu is a great place to enjoy the outdoors. Not the outdoorsy type? No problem! Honolulu boasts great shopping, a thriving music scene, numerous annual festivals, and museums for art and history lovers alike. - Sarah E. Dollard aises.org University of North Dakota AISES College Chapter T he AISES College Chapter at the University of North Dakota works hard to support members who are pursuing degrees in STEM fields while preserving their cultural heritage. Chapter meetings might feature presentations by working scientists to familiarize students with current research; university staff members, like the director of the campus career center discussing the nuts and bolts of preparing a resume; or a Chapter alumnus, now a resident in family medicine, discussing careers in health care. The Chapter also spends time preparing for regional and national AISES meetings, and works hard to raise funds so that all members who wish to can attend the National Conference. Members participate in the university's community outreach day and have organized their own volunteer projects, like tutoring at a neighborhood elementary school. Founded in the late 1980s and revitalized in 2001, the Chapter was recognized in 2005 and 2007 with the university's Outstanding Student Organization Award and came home from the National Conference with Chapter of the Year Awards in 2005 and 2015. Most recently, it hosted the successful 2016 Region Five conference. "The leadership of the group from year to year is simply amazing," says Chapter advisor Dr. Katherine Sukalski, who is especially proud of the many former members who have become Sequoyah Fellows. The current Chapter leadership roster includes Brooke Fettig, president; Emily Falcon, vice president; Andrea Kelsch, treasurer; and Hannah Balderas, secretary. 2016-2017 SPECIAL COLLEGE ISSUE * WINDS OF CHANGE 57 http://www.aises.org
