development, students can get a well-rounded education at a university
that prepares them to meet the challenges facing today's world.
On top of career-building opportunities, students have access to
more than 800 organizations, including an AISES chapter. And for
those who are sports enthusiasts, the UMN has a tradition of
athletic excellence - it's won seven national football
championships and a combined 11 national titles in
women's and men's hockey. Plus, the school is the
birthplace of cheerleading. In 1898, Jack "Johnny"
Campbell picked up a megaphone at the final football
game and led the crowd with a rousing cheer for "Minn-eso-tah!" (The team won.)
When not in class, students can explore the campus of
more than 1,150 acres. Pillsbury Hall has a world-class
meteorite exhibit with more than 100 specimens, and the library
features the world's largest collection of Sherlock Holmes material.
On the St. Paul side you'll find a climbing and bouldering wall and a
dairy and meat salesroom. And once students learn to navigate the
inside passages of the Gopher Way, they don't have to go outside to
reach much of the campus - a particularly pleasing option in the
Minnesota winter.
The university is also one of the only Big Ten schools within
walking distance of a major metropolis that has a lot to offer.
Students can visit art galleries, attend festivals, explore historic
architecture, and grab a bite at a local restaurant
before catching the game of one of seven
professional sports teams that all call "the Cities"
home. In fact, in 2014 this cosmopolitan urban
center was named one of the best cities for
millennials by Vox and a top 10 American city by
the Huffington Post.

n the land of 10,000 lakes - technically 12,000 lakes plus 70,000
miles of rivers and streams - water is an integral resource. But
managing that resource presents a challenge. That's why the University
of Minnesota is home to some of the world's most advanced
water research - and that's just one focus of this Big Ten
school. With more than a dozen colleges ranging from
dentistry to design and pharmacy to public affairs, the
UMN Twin Cities aims to change lives through
research, education, and outreach. Students have not
only tested the effects of wastewater on farmlands,
they've also helped create artificial corneas, designed
underwater turbines, experimented with energy-producing
crops, and more.
Because research-based education is a top priority,
students have the chance to learn from professors who have won
Guggenheim Fellowships, MacArthur Foundation Fellowships, and
Nobel Prizes. Plus, the Undergraduate Research Opportunity
Program (UROP) lets students get hands-on experience in their field,
travel abroad using UROP funding, expand their network, and
enhance potential graduate school applications - all while getting
paid for their work. They can also participate in year-round or
summer-only research programs in fields like electrical and computer
engineering, cardiovascular medicine, Earth-surface dynamics, and
physics and astronomy.
Degrees are available in fields as diverse as
biochemistry; genetics, cell biology, and development; applied economics; fisheries and wildlife;
aerospace engineering and mechanics; astrophysics;
bioproducts and biosystems science, engineering,
and management; psychology; computer science;
and more. And because there are also colleges
devoted to liberal arts, business, and human
