If you want personal confirmation of the bright job prospects for those with the tech
chops needed to create apps, perform this little exercise: take out your mobile
phone and click your way to the app store. There you will find all flavors of mobile
applications - some of them free, others costing upward of $10 - that allow users
to do everything from monitoring their daily exercise or watching TV shows to
searching for Pokémon characters or finding a date. App development, to put it
mildly, is a growing and lucrative field, with over 740,000 people working on apps
today and 22.7 percent expected job growth from 2015 to 2025. The median annual
salary for those able to create the next Candy Crush or XpenseTracker isn't shabby
either: app developers can expect to earn around $96,400, compared to the median
salary of $43,430 for all other jobs. As much as this is a field that seems to reward
a sense of fun and creativity, it's not one that can be entered without serious STEM
skills. A college degree in computer science or software engineering is standard,
though a master's will likely open even more doors.
