year off between high school and
college, many people panned the
decision as another example of elitism
in our society. After all, they said, only
wealthy students can afford to travel or
volunteer for months. But more and
more colleges are encouraging students
to test their independence in a "bridge"
year, and some even provide funding for
service-based experiences. Today
students from all walks of life are
stepping away from the classroom
temporarily in search of a different,
enriching experience. For many, of
course, the experience is intended to be
literally enriching - they are working
to help defray the cost of an expensive
education. No matter what socioeconomic background you come from,
minimizing student loans can be a
smart move. As the gap year trend
grows, more students are opting for a
combination experience, dividing their
time between work and travel, or work
and volunteering. And all of it can pay
off academically. According to research
done at Middlebury College, post-gap
students outperform their peers
academically in a positive effect that
lasts throughout their college experience. While the traditional gap year falls
between secondary and higher education, there's no one size fits all. College
students often take a semester or a year
off, returning to campus with a steadier
focus on their studies as well as a
healthier bank account.
