❚ Former astronaut Dr. John
Herrington and Boeing engineer
Mark Abotossaway participated in
judging and cheering on the competitors at NASA's eighth annual First
Nations Launch. Hosted by the
Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium,
the competition was attended by 15
teams from tribal colleges and other
schools. While the ultimate goal is to
encourage indigenous students to
pursue STEM fields, the immediate
goal is for each team to design, create,
and launch a high-powered K-class
rocket. In this year's competition, all
but one of the teams met the challenge
of launching their rockets and
completing a successful flight.

Rebekka Guyon (above, center) has been awarded a National Science Foundation
Graduate Research Fellowship. A spring graduate of Michigan Technological University, Guyon majored in geological/geophysical engineering. Her research focused on
reducing dust emissions from mine tailings, which impact health, especially among
the Native population. She will pursue a master's degree at Michigan Tech.

Kimmerer received the 2016 Ely S.
Parker Award, the highest AISES
honor.
❚ Tarlynn Tone-Pah-Hote has been
named a 2017 Udall Scholar in the
field of Native health care. An aspiring
physician, she is a biology major and a
rising senior at the University of
Minnesota Morris. Tone-Pah-Hote
also participated in a National
Science Foundation
Research Experience for
Undergraduates project
in Borneo.

❚ Professional member Kimberly
Durment Locke organized a visit by
students at Sherman Indian High
School to The Aerospace Corporation
under the auspices of the company's
American-Indian and Alaskan-Native
Council. Locke is the founding
president of the council. During the
visit she told the students about AISES
and arranged for council members to
escort the students.
❚ Cody Sifford was quoted extensively
in the article "These Revolutionary
Programs Are Helping Native American Kids Chase Careers in Science,
Technology, and Engineering" on
uproxx.com.

❚ Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer is one of
four coauthors of the "Let Our
Indigenous Voices Be Heard" declaration endorsing the Earth Day March
for Science. The document was signed
by more than a thousand indigenous
scientists and allies worldwide. A
