Horace Mann Magazine - Fall/Winter 2010-11 - (Page 2)

Letters letters The Conversation Continues The spring 2010 issue of Horace Mann Magazine described efforts by Horace Mann School to achieve a more sustainable campus, and reported on the professional and volunteer efforts by a number of alumni on behalf of the environment. In preparing an issue of this type the magazine aims to be as comprehensive as possible, and include as many alumni about whose work are aware. When we miss including you it is gratifying to hear from you or from other alumni able to update us on your activities. Jason Segal ’91 wrote in about his work with Sustainable Development Capital, LLP and his interest in getting in touch with other alumni in the field. Other alumni reported on the significant environmental work in which the U.S. Justice Department Senior Trial Attorney Jeremy Korzenik ’70 is engaged. We are pleased to update our listing with the following brief bios. I was pleased to see the topic of the recent magazine about sustainability. I am a partner in an investment banking firm that has an exclusive focus on sustainability. I would look forward to engaging with the alumni community on relevant issues. Information about my firm, Sustainable Development Capital, is available on our website. Jason Segal ’91, CFA Managing Director, Business Development Sustainable Development Capital LLP jason.segal@sdcl-ib.com, http://www.sdcl-ib.com Jason Segal ’91 joined Sustainable Development Capital LLP (SDCL) in 2008. SDCL is a London-based (with offices in China and New York) specialist investment banking and asset management firm with an exclusive focus on investment themes related to sustainability. Jason’s focus is on business development, including asset raising and sourcing of projects and partnerships in North America. Jason oversees SDCL’s relationships with institutional investors globally, and also advises asset managers, corporations, NGOs and governments on sustainable and environmental investment strategies. Prior to joining SDCL, Jason was a Managing Director at Citigroup in the Global Prime Brokerage group, in New York. In this role, he worked with a broad range of investors on financing, portfolio management, product strategy and business development. Previously, Jason worked in portfolio management for Nikko, Citigroup’s Equities Division in Tokyo, and at Goldman Sachs in New York. Jeremy F. Korzenik ’70 is a Senior Trial Attorney at the United States Department of Justice’s Environmental Crimes Section. In his 20 years with the section he has prosecuted cases under all of the major environmental statues and related federal criminal laws in over a dozen states. He has prosecuted the poultry industry in Mississippi and Missouri for Clean Water Act violations, initiated pesticide misuse and wildlife destruction cases in Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado, pesticide counterfeiting charges in Alabama, and in Tennessee and Mississippi, tried cases resulting in the conviction of individuals whose willful misuse of highly toxic pesticides caused one of the largest EPA emergency evacuations in US history. He has prosecuted individuals and corporations for falsifying records to conceal the illegal discharge of waste into rivers and into sewage treatment systems, obtained convictions for illegal hazardous waste disposal and fraud against sham hazardous waste recyclers in Mississippi, Ohio, and New England, prosecuted hazardous waste dumpers, and won convictions on fraud and Clean Water Act charges in a landmark trial involving the destruction of hundreds of acres of wetland on the Mississippi Gulf coast. Most recently he won convictions against corporate and individual defendants for discharging into the sewer system of Mobile, Alabama, waste that caused massive sewage overflows into tributaries of Mobile Bay. Prior to joining the Department of Justice, between 1983 and 1991, Korzenik served as an Assistant Attorney General in the New Hampshire Department of Justice, first in the Criminal Bureau investigating homicides and major crimes, and then in the Environmental Enforcement Bureau where he brought criminal and civil actions for violations of state environmental laws and helped draft state environmental legislation. He represented New Hampshire as co-plaintiff with the federal government in one of the few Superfund toxic waste cleanup cases to go to trial, a 200day trial of numerous corporations responsible for the contamination of a large site in southern New Hampshire that resulted in a multi-million dollar site remediation. “Enter Laughing” issue continued… with Steven Fife ’71 When writing about alumni involved in creating humor in various ways, this magazine’s listing of alumni biographies did not include Steven Fife ’71. Perhaps that was because Fife’s most recent project of which Horace Mann Magazine was most aware at publishing time was his play “Savage World.” Set in post-Watergate America, the play is about an outspoken black athlete who has been framed for murder. One reviewer called it a “haunting” and “epic American play.” Fife has mixed drama and comedy throughout his career. A graduate of Columbia University’s MFA Playwrights program, his plays have been produced in NYC at Jewish Rep, Playhouse 91, Primary Stages, Circle Rep Lab, La Mama, Theater for the New City, the Samuel Beckett Theater, and many other venues. He has written articles, screenplays and scripts for TV as well. Comedies include “Mickey’s Home” and “Sizzle, Sizzle” as well as his humor-filled autobiography Best Revenge: How the Theater Saved My Life… and Has Been Killing Me Ever Since. Fife’s latest project is a musical “Young Forever”, a contemporary re-imagining of the Peter Pan story. Fife wrote the book and lyrics, to music by Yuval Shrem, and directed an in-progress workshop at the Edgemar Center in Santa Monica, CA in June 2010. He is pursuing avenues to bring the completed work to the stage.
