Head of School letter from the head of school s I write this letter from my office in Spence Cottage the calendar on my desk tells me we have reached new year. It takes that reminder, because the thought astounds me. A new calendar year for the rest of the world means a new beginning. But, for those of us who live according to the rhythms of a school, this means the year is half over, and that would hint at some sort of slowdown as students and teachers muster the energy to apply themselves to months more of studies. Or, it might suggest speeding up—to make sure that requisite classroom material is completed. Yet, there is no sign of stopping, nor sense of having to cram anything into the coming days here at Horace Mann School. As I look out my window I see students clamoring to their classes, calling to one another on the way, with the eagerness they brought to the first day of school. As I walk through our hallways and dip into classrooms I feel the energy with which our teachers engage discussion among their students, as electric as it was at the start of September. And, as I walk across the road to our Lower Division or travel downtown to our Nursery I am invigorated by the enthusiasm our younger students show for their art and English and science classes, and all of the activities in between. A time to pause, to rejuvenate our engines? Not at Horace Mann. A time to speed ahead? Perhaps. Not to catch up with what’s yet to be covered, but to make sure there’s enough time to delve ever deeper. A time to reflect, with the end of the year and the start of another? We do that every day, after every lesson, game or concert, asking ourselves what went well, what we can do better, thus making reflection itself a significant element of education here. That leaves us with a time to be grateful for having reached this milestone safely, able to move on to another. It is a time to show appreciation to those who have escorted us through one “era” and who continue to guide us along our way. Showing appreciation is something which I, for one, need no calendar reminder to do. Indeed, it is the appreciation I have for everyone at this School today, for all of those alumni who have ever been a part of Horace Mann, that fortifies our efforts here, and fuels my every moment of service as your Head of School. The sense of profound gratitude I wish to express to the community that is Horace Mann is as essential to me as my five senses. After five years as your Head of School those of you I teach and watch develop, through childhood, adolescence and into young adulthood, touch every fiber of my being. As I continue to pursue the privilege of guiding this School I give thanks to those alongside whom I teach, and those with whom I plan our initiatives. Hearing your wise counsel informs my direction. Immersed as I am in the life of Horace Mann School day, night and year around, I am grateful for the magnificent setting our staff maintains, in seasons of storms or redolent with blossoms. Feeling secure in the care of those responsible for the well-being of our students, coupled with the care our students demonstrate toward one another, nourishes the soul. Finally, to those of you who volunteer your efforts and support on behalf of Horace Mann School, to those who help steer it toward its future, to those alumni who embody our legacy, I thank you for your vision. With warmest wishes and deepest appreciation, A Dr. Thomas M. Kelly P ’18 Head of School 4 Horace Mann Magazine Fall/Winter 2010-11
